Bella Posta Swaps Alpine Kitsch for Colour and Aperitivo

Bella Posta Swaps Alpine Kitsch for Colour and Aperitivo

A farmhouse-turned-hotel above Bolzano reopened in March 2026 with retro furniture, warm colour and a breakfast that runs until 11. The mountains come with a spritz mindset.

A hotel in the Dolomites where breakfast runs until 11 a.m. and the afternoon belongs to aperitivo is already breaking a few local habits. Bella Posta in South Tyrol goes further: it has swapped the usual carved-wood Alpine script for warm colour, retro-inspired furniture and clean lines.

The hotel sits on the Ritten plateau above Bolzano, in the village of Oberbozen (also called Soprabolzano), at roughly 1,220 metres. It reopened in March 2026 after an extensive renovation. According to DSCENE’s Katarina Doric, who stayed in August, the result is a contemporary take on mountain living that feels playful rather than rustic.

Two old buildings, one new attitude

The property joins two historic buildings once known as Post Victoria. The main house has been a farmhouse, an inn and a hotel with its own post office. Next door, Villa Victoria offered extra rooms. The Holzner family, who also run the nearby Parkhotel Holzner, worked with architectural studio raro to pull them together.

What came out of that collaboration is a palette of warm tones, natural wood and furniture with a vintage wink. Large windows keep the landscape in the room. Lounges, terraces and soft seating areas are there to lure guests out of their rooms and into the building’s shared spaces.

The main building has 22 individually designed rooms and suites. They range from compact options for solo travellers and couples to two-level suites that can take a small family or a group of friends. Many have a balcony or terrace facing the mountains and gardens.

The annexe is the quieter sibling. It opened in summer 2025, ahead of the main building’s relaunch, and holds 14 studios in dark wood with simple furnishings and generous proportions. Each has a balcony, terrace or sheltered garden, and some come with a kitchenette.

Dolce vita, no timetable

The dining concept is called Dolce Vita All Day, and it does what it says. Instead of fixed sittings, food and drinks are available across the day. Breakfast, until 11 a.m., covers pastries, fruit, yoghurt, brioche and savoury plates. Crostata and snacks follow, then aperitivo takes over the afternoon.

Dinner is familiar Italian with South Tyrolean touches: antipasti, homemade pasta, classic desserts. An honesty bar stays open late. Anyone after something more ambitious can head to Restaurant 1908 at Parkhotel Holzner, where chef Stephan Zippl cooks contemporary regional cuisine.

Doric’s verdict on the format was practical. After a long day on the trails, she wrote, being able to walk in and order an aperitivo without worrying about reservation times felt particularly welcome.

Walks, a cable car and a very old train

Location does a lot of the work here. The Ritten cable car is a three-minute walk from the hotel and reaches Bolzano in about twelve minutes. That means a morning among the city’s historic streets, shops and cafés, then a return to the plateau by lunch or later.

On foot, trails start almost at the door. Doric hiked the Freud Promenade, which links Oberbozen with Klobenstein. It is named for Sigmund Freud, who spent time on the plateau in 1911, and runs through forest and meadow with views of the Schlern and Rosengarten peaks. She and her companions kept walking beyond the end of the route, then skipped the trek back by boarding the Ritten railway, which has connected villages on the plateau since 1907.

Back at base, the Gioia Spa has an indoor pool with mountain views, plus a sauna, steam bath and relaxation areas. The garden is there for reading or, as Doric put it, spending an afternoon doing very little.

The pitch

Doric visited in high summer, when the hills were intensely green and the heat of the valley was a distant memory, and she is upfront that the weather helped. Her case for Bella Posta rests on its mood: a mountain stay that feels spontaneous, with the comforts of a modern retreat and none of the formality that tends to come with the genre.

For the design-minded, the appeal is a historic building given a bright, personal makeover. For everyone else, it is a hotel where you can do a long hike, ride a 1907 train home and still be on time for a spritz. Her closing line sums up the offer: the greatest luxury was having the freedom to enjoy the mountains at her own pace.

Bella Posta is at Soprabolzano, Paese 2, 39054 Ritten, South Tyrol, Italy. Bookings and enquiries go through bellaposta.it.
